About the author of Salem History Online
My name is Erik Smith. I was a History Major at Connecticut College,
as well as an Economics Major; before that I went to St. John's Prep in
Danvers. My reasons for creating this website are many, but here are a
few. In searching for topics for my column in the Salem Gazette, I have
come across many fascinating stories about Salem. I scribbled them down
in notes of things I wanted to research at a later date. At some point
it occurred to me that the by-product was more worthy of work than the
original idea. I started digging for dates non-stop. It took about one
year to find enough entries to have something to say on 366 days, which
includes Leap Day.
There are many sources for this collection of ideas for further
research. Most work was done in the Salem History Room in the Salem
Public Library. I love that room and love spending time in it. Some of
my initial research has also been done in the Registry of Deeds. This
is what I would consider the perfect project; I can never actually
finish it.
Another of the reasons I have created this website is commerce. I
want to find a way to research and write about Salem history for
profit. If you are interested in advertising here, please send me an
email.
My hope is that I can continue to make this website grow and find
local supporters as I do. I am willing to barter for banner ads with or
without links to websites, and I am also eager to help small companies
build those websites. I’ve worked on websites for Shubie’s
Marketplace in Marblehead as well as Jordan’s Marine. I know I can help
small businesses get online with well crafted websites.
I have two film credits, in Necronomicon, based on H.P. Lovecraft’s
horror stories about the North Shore of Boston, and Fantasia 2000, Roy
Disney’s realization of his Uncle Walt’s dream of creating sequels to
1940’s Fantasia. I have done uncredited (meaning enough to get overtime
pay but too little to fight for credit) work on Runaway Brain, Hercules,
The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, Tarzan, and the cancelled Walt
Disney Feature Animation project Don Quixote with Paul & Gaetan Brizzi.
Paul & Gaetan are now back in Europe, making a movie for Mick Jagger's
production company, Jagged Films. The title of this project is "Ruby
Tuesday."
I have recently added another credit to my list, my first completed
documentary. On August 23 I finished production on "The Legacies of
Captain John Bertam." It can be seen online in QuickTime here or on
Google Video here. It is 23 minutes long. It will also be running on
Salem Access Television; their schedule is here.
